Chicken Licken Hotwings® are not standard chicken wings — they are a registered trademark product unique to Chicken Licken (Golden Fried Chicken Pty Ltd). The recipe origins trace back to 1972, when founder George Sombonos purchased a secret fried chicken recipe from a fast food outlet in Waco, Texas for US$1,000 during a trip to America.
This recipe — adapted and refined over the following decade — became the foundation of the Hotwings® seasoning blend. By 2013, Chicken Licken was selling more than 5 million Hotwings® per month across 259 outlets in South Africa (BusinessTech, 2025). The wings are double-seasoned, pressure-fried, and served hot, The spice level is consistent across all locations because the seasoning blend is centrally produced and supplied to all franchise operators.
